The 3 Stars – August 17, 2024

Categories :

This is a very special edition of The 3 Stars Blog. It is not only my birthday but also the day that my new internet radio station, Radio Free Ian, is launched. I get a radio station for my birthday! How cool is that?

While so many songs could show up on this auspicious occasion, it’s really a no-brainer on the ones that made the list this week.

So, for the first 3 Stars Blog in the Radio Free Ian era, I humbly submit this list for your approval.

The Number 3 Song:  Katie Keddie – dead flame

There is so much to like about this song! I’m a sucker for a hint of shoegaze in a song, Katie has an amazing voice, and I imagine being hit up by an ex and turning them away. It’s the conversation we eventually rehearse, out loud or mentally, just to have it ready if it ever comes up.

Be honest. Admit it.

“Dead Flame,” (Stylized as “dead flame”) allows us to be okay with relationships ending with no chance for a second act because we’re no longer the same people we were when the relationship was on a successful path.

Where was this song three years ago? I could have used it then.

The Number 2 Star: Fontaines D.C. – Here’s The Thing

The Fontaines D.C. become the first act to ever appear in The 3 Stars Blog twice. This has a slightly different feel than “dead flame.” This song is more of a plea for reconciliation, keeping the door open. While there is recognition of pain on both sides, it’s abundantly clear that the song’s narrator bears the brunt of the heartbreak. There’s the plea of “if you change your mind.”

Dude, she’s just not that into you.

Trust me. This is the voice of experience.

The Number 1 Star: Thank – Writing Out A List of All The Names Of God

Another excellent punk act from Leeds (home of previous 3 Stars bands IDLES and The Lambrini Girls). And does the band write out a list of all the names of God, as the title teases? It’s pretty thorough. While a forthcoming album has been teased on the band’s Facebook page, no further details have been released.
